We’re supporting Tyre Safe’s Tyre Safety Month which is taking place throughout October by offering our top tips on how to have safe tyres.
It is your responsibility to ensure that the tyres on your vehicle meet the required standards, this is both a legal requirement and key to ensuring you and your passenger’s safety on the road. Tyres are one of the main components that help a vehicle maintain its grip on the road, if they don’t meet the expected standard, your grip and stopping ability will be compromised. Failure to maintain your vehicles tyres can lead to a £100 fine, accidents and in the worst cases fatalities.
The legal minimum tyre tread depth varies by each type of vehicle:
TyreSafe is the UK’s charity dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of correct tyre maintenance and the dangers of defective and illegal tyres. Formed in 2006, TyreSafe’s activities have helped reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured each year in a tyre related accident by 46%. Tyre Safety Month has been running successfully for over 10 years and for this year’s annual October-long Tyre Safety Month, TyreSafe are asking Britain’s motorists – If your tyres don’t stop you, what will?
We’re supporting Tyre Safe’s Tyre Safety Month by offering our expert advice. As the leading tyre fitting company in Doncaster, we see first-hand on a daily basis many motorists risking their safety with unsafe tyres.
Here are our top tips:
Check your tyre pressures regularly – The pressure of the tyres should be checked at least once a month. If you discover a change in pressure, ensure you restore it to the manufactures recommended pressure. You should check pressure when the tyres are cold before a long journey.
Check your tyres tread depth – The tyre tread depth should be checked on a regular basis either using a tread gauge or the built-in tyre tread wear indicator. Tread depth levels for different vehicles can be seen further up this article.
Check for irregular wear or damage – Bulges, cracks, tears or cuts are all the kind of damage that will require quick attention. You should also check for damage to the rims as this can lead to tyre defects.
Don’t forget to check your spare tyre – You should do the same checks on your spare tyre as well, ensuring you take it out and check both sides.
Consider tyre quality – Part worn tyres can be false economy as they typically offer less tread depth when you fit it and will need replacing much sooner than a new tyre.
Slow down in wet weather – As the season changes to become more wet you should adapt your driving style accordingly. Grip on wet surfaces reduces as a tyre gets older, or as water depth increases, so the safest course of action is to drive more slowly.
